news from san francisco, a short time ago pg&e crews capped a gas like at the scene of an overnight house fire. alex savidge is in san francisco with video of flames shooting from that gas line. alex. >> reporter: i can also tell you two people were sent to the hospital after this early morning hour fire. hou -- house fire. you can hear and see pg&e crews out here. they are working on this natural gas line that ruptured and was on fire when this fire broke out around 1:00 this morning. a dangerous situation. flames were shooting from that line about 15 feet up in the air. battalion chief tells me crews had to work around that ruptured gas line to put out the fire inside the home. a two story place here on the 100 block of athens street. pg&e crews came in and were able to shut off that gas line.

arson investigator is looking at what triggered this two alarm fire and why that gas line ruptured and caught fire. >> we did have a shut off for the gas that we believe gas pipe melted. due to the fact a fire coming from the front of the building. that's what we see now. >> reporter: this home is a total loss. four people were inside at the time. two of them were checked out for smoke inhalation. were taken to the hospital. the battalion chief doesn't have an update on their condition. you can see pg&e crews continuing to do repair work. again they are focused rob the gas -- on the gas line that runs to this house. at this point the investigation will have to be under taken to figure out if it was the ruptured gas line that caused thefire in the home or vice versa. live this morning in san francisco alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news.

firefighters in san jose continue to look for answers in an apartment fire that killed a couple and their young granddaughter. the fire started saturday night just after 11:00. they died in the fire. more than 50 other people were displaced and being helped by the red cross. >> when we got here there were people standing out here. they were slivering. we provided blankets, comfort kits. later on we provided a hotel room. >> three people were treated for smoke inhalation. ktvu reporter janine de la vega will have a live report coming up at 5:30. thousands of people are expected to head to san francisco for the annual new years eve fire works spectacular. the free show will start at midnight and last about 15

minutes. 250,000 people are expected to attend. officials are encouraging you to take public transportation. police will also be out in full force looking for people who are intoxicated in public. as people ring in the new year highway patrol officers will be cracking on drunk drivers as well. all available chp officers will be on duty tonight and tomorrow night. bay area police departments will be out in force. so far this year dui related deaths around the area is down. statewide nine deadly collisions were recorded. that is down from 12 from last year. bart is extending its service. trains will run every 20 minutes with service until 3:00 a.m. to prevent overcrowding some

streets will skip either montgomery street or downtown embarcadero. muni is also increasing service and offering free rides in san francisco as well. buses and trains will be open from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.. is in parts of the world the fuzz year has already started. coming up at 4:45 we will show you the celebration in new zealand. lawmakers in washington, d.c. have less than 17 hours to come up with a deal to prevent the country from going over the fiscal cliff. the house and senate convened for a rare sunday session but no deal yet. senate minority leader mitch is talking with joe biden to come up with a solution. if nothing is resolved by midnight tonight tax rates for all americans will increase. >> going to work with whoever.

control and crashed their car into the building. >> literally five seconds after i had entered the side room we entered what i with thought was a side ring. >> the teens were take ton the hospital with serious injuries. a 66-year-old man who was inside the building has a broken leg. police interviewed a second driver who may have been racing with the teens but not yet made any arrests. a woman accused of a fatal hit and run crash is expected to enter a plea in court today. she hit a group of people walking along a road two weeks ago. 16-year-old woman was knocked down a hillside and killed. she is being held on $2 million bail. she had been studying to become a police officer before the crash. new this morning some san rafael city employees are being paid to car pool or take mass transit. starting tomorrow the city of san rafael will pay almost 370

employees to find eco friendly ways to get to new york. employees who use mass transit will get a $20 clipper card. workers whores or buy an electric card will get a $100 sty fan. people say now is the time to buy. tomorrow california's sales tax will go up one quarter percent statewide. it will increase to 7.5%. it may be small in comparison but some shoppers figure they will save a few extra dollars while they can. >> with the tax hikes and what have it, it will be more expensive. so why not save now? it's cold out there. it will be mostly sunny today. upper 40s and very low 50s. people in new zealand are already celebrating a new year. you're looking at the sky tower there in new zealand. it it will up the sky at midnight as people honked their horns and cheered for what 2013 might bring. organizers for the big celebration in new york did one last test to make sure things are ready. the 12,000-pound ball will rise 130 feet tonight in front of thousands of people. nearly 27 water crystals cover the ball. we'll have more on the local new years eve celebrations coming up in our 5:00 hour. this morning secretary of

state hillary clinton remains under observation at a new york hospital after being treated for a blood clot. a spokesman says doctors discovered the clot during a follow up exam. the 65-year-old secretary of state had a stomach virus when she fainted causing the concussion. nine people are dead and dozens injured after a tour bus crashed. the accident happened yesterday on interstate a-4 near dead man pass. authorities say the bus careened through a guardrail before plunging 100 feet down an embankment. emergency crews used ropes to save survivors. >> i have been a firefighter for 20 years this is the first time i have seen anything like this. >> the bus was traveling from las vegas to vancouver british columbia. the body of the gunman in the deadly school shooting in

the newtown connecticut has been claimed for burial. the gunman's remains were claimed several days ago by someone who wanted to remain anonymous. the gunman killed 20 first graders and six adults. the president voiced his skepticism about the nra proposal to put armed guards at schools. instead the president vowed to rally the american people to limit gun violence saying he still supports increased background checks and a ban on assault rifles. today a second volunteer firefighter who was shot and killed in new york will be laid to rest. yesterday hundreds of people paid their respects to firefighter and police lieutenant michael. investigators say he and thomas were killed by 62-year-old exconvict who set his own home

no biggy. wednesday and thursday look good. friday increasing clouds. no consensus on the weekend. brian. steve, thank you. comedian cat williams is out on bail after being arrested in los angeles on friday. police took williams into custody after charges of -- williams has had several run ins with the law in the past few months including a fight here in oakland. kim kardashian is trending this morning after news the reality star is pregnant with kanye west's baby. west made the announcement during the show in atlantic city last night. e news confirmed with the kardashian family that kim is about 12 weeks pregnant. the excitement is building up in pasadena this morning. just how much longer people will have to wait to claim their spot for the anticipated rose parade. caught on tape flames seen shooting from a home in petaluma last night. how firefighters were able to get the people inside out safely.

welcome back. in petaluma firefighters are trying to figure out what sparked a fire that sent flames shooting from the garage of a home. the fire broke out around 5:30 last night on tampico court. everyone inside the home was able to get out safely. damage is statemented at

$200,000. police are searching for more information surrounding the death of man that was shot multiple times near a golf course in livermore. a jogger discovered the body just before 7:30 saturday morning. the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. about 30 people showed up last night for a vigil to honor ogdon. the oakland police department is reviewing surveillance video and talking to people who witnessed the death of a 15-year-old girl shot and killed yesterday afternoon in broad daylight. authorities believe the suspect is also young. 13-16 years old. it happened when the teen was walking with friends through the lion creek crossing housing project. the gunman opened fire on the group. a 14-year-old boy suffered nonlife threatening injuries. it's been one year since a five-year-old boy was shot and killed near his family's taco truck. yesterday they honored the life

there. no problems to report. 680 at the sunol grade traffic on the right there heading southbound toward san jose. on the opposite side toward pleasanton. and finally 101 through san francisco you can see traffic is moving along very nicely on the right hand side there. and on the opposite side towarddown -- toward downtown and bay bridge. steve. wasn't i just talking to you a minute ago? >> we were. and we were both saying how cold it is. >> it is cold. 20s and 30s inland. a little warmer by the bay you would expect that. i did see the city down to 42 a little while ago. a little hint of a breeze but lots of 30s. it's a cold one out there. four below up in tahoe. physical -- 38 sacramento. it's cold across the board here. few bans of high clouds will come by. you split a system you take a lot of the energy out of it.

their spots. pasadena police doesn't allow anyone to start claiming a spot until noon today. they must remain in place until the start of the parade. the national hockey league and nhl players union are back at work trying to save what is left of the hockey season. more than half the season has already been lost. but they are scheduled to meet in new york today. those talks did not include owners or players. sources say the league is hoping for a settlement that will allow a 48 game season starting in mid january. time is 4:56. coming up we are following overnight news in san francisco. a fire and gas leak is causing big problems in one neighborhood. the clock is ticking toward the midnight deadline. frantic last minute effort to prevent the u.s. from going over the cliff. and we will take a look at some of your traffic in the south bay next. well, well, well.
